(State College) -- A new study from Penn State is predicting Pennsylvania's economy will take a major hit when rate caps expire in two years. When electricity rates increase, the report says consumers will compensate for the cost by cutting back on other purchases.

Researcher David Passmore says that will ultimately create an economic slowdown for the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth doesn't have as many ties to the auto industry as Michigan does. But Rose Baker, the director of Penn State's Center for Regional Economic and Workforce Analysis, says it's a $24 billion business in Pennsylvania. That includes dealerships, repair shops and factories. Baker says when that industry loses money, the whole state suffers.
