Spectator Sports in Allegheny County
The Penn State Workforce Education and Development Initiative conducted an analysis of the economic impacts of spectator sports in Allegheny County. We asked Matthew Loiacono, a research assistant with the Institute for Research in Training and Development, to prepare the attached Economic and Workforce Brief, “Role of Spectator Sports in the Economy of Allegheny County.”![]()
The Brief quantifies the role of every 100 workers employed by the spectator sports industry in generating jobs, compensation, and property taxes in the region.
This Brief helps explain the impact of plans recently announced by Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato for the construction of a new arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pittsburgh Penguins signed a lease for the new arena, which commits them to remain in Pittsburgh until 2040. The Penguins and government officials reached an agreement to build a new $290 million arena. For more about the new arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins, refer to the following websites:

Data from the 2002 Economic Census, the most recent economic census available, indicates that there were 25 establishments in Pennsylvania involved in sports teams and clubs that generated $736 million in receipts (6% of US receipts of sports teams and clubs) with 1,811 employees (4.4% of US employees in sports teams and clubs) and an annual payroll of $491.2 million (5.7% of US payroll of sports teams and clubs). The analysis in the attached Brief focuses on the impact of the entire spectator sports industry in Allegheny County, not merely hockey.
An analysis behind a Penn State Economic & Workforce Brief targets an industry (a group of establishments providing similar products or services), not an individual firm. As a result, economic and workforce impacts calculated for a Brief represent an industry average, not the impacts generated by an individual firm.
